What It's Like to Live in North Carolina

North Carolina, known as the "Tar Heel" state, is located in the Southeastern region of the United States. From beautiful beaches to mountains and valleys, North Carolina has it all.

North Carolina has an interesting history. Blackbeard, a famous pirate, ran his ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, aground in North Carolina. The remains of the ship were found in 1996. North Carolina also became one of the Thirteen English Colonies, beginning with the famous "lost colony of Roanoke." North Carolina is also the location of the Wright brothers' famous "First Flight." Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first controlled, sustained flight of an aircraft on December 17, 1903, in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

There is lots to do in North Carolina. The Outer Banks is a tourist hotspot, with plenty of boardwalks and public beach access. North Carolina also has over 40 state parks to explore, with many featuring hiking, trails, fishing, camping, and more. North Carolina's coast and harbors are dotted with many lighthouses, some of which are available for tours.

North Carolina is home to 17 public universities, 58 public community colleges, and numerous private universities and colleges. Many businesses are located in North Carolina with some headquartered in the state.
